CCTV fire culprit given 13 more years in jail

A former CCTV official who was sentenced to seven years for causing a deadly fire in the state-run broadcaster's new Beijing office tower was given another 13 years in jail for graft and embezzlement.

Xu Wei, 52, former head of the construction office for the new CCTV headquarters, embezzled more than 3.22 million yuan (US$510,692) from the project, the Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court learned.

Xu was also accused of taking 1 million yuan in bribes, the Procuratorial Daily reported today.

The building was gutted by a fire on February 9, 2009 on the eve of Chinese New Year, causing 160 million yuan in losses. A fireman died; six firemen and two construction workers were injured in the accident.

Xu was jailed in 2010 for staging a fireworks display at the site of the new building without approval from the local fire department, the court said.

Also jailed were 19 others who were serving prison terms from three years to six and a half years, the paper said.
