CCTV verdicts upheld
A COURT in Beijing has upheld verdicts on 13 officials for their involvement in a fire last year at the under-construction headquarters of the China Central Television station, Jcrb.com reported yesterday.
An illegal fireworks display started a blaze that gutted the 30-story CCTV building on February 9. A firefighter died and six of his colleagues and two construction workers were injured.
Damage was estimated at more than 160 million yuan (US$23.44 million).
The Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court sentenced 20 officials to jail ranging from three to seven years on May 10.
Xu Wei, former head of the construction office of the new headquarters, was jailed for seven years. The court said it was Xu's decision to stage the fireworks show.
Li Xiaohua, a vice general manager from Tsinghua Tongfang Co Ltd, got six years and Sha Peng, general manager of Supernova Media Development Co Ltd, 5 1/2 years. Wang Shirong, CCTV new headquarters' vice office dean, was sentenced to 4 1/2 years.
The 13 who appealed, including Xu, Li, Sha and Wang, had their appeals rejected by the Beijing Higher People's Court yesterday.
