CNPC executive given life sentence for bribery
A former manager of China National Petroleum Corporation was sentenced to life imprisonment for taking 8.59 million yuan (US$1.35 million) in bribes and possessing 10 million yuan of properties with unknown origins.
Wang Xianlu, 56, was convicted of the crime of bribery and holding a huge amount of assets with unidentified sources by the Linqu Intermediate People's Court in Harbin, capital of northeast Heilongjiang Province.
Wang made no appeal against the court ruling, the local Economic Information reported today.
Wang's corruption began in 1996 when he was in charge of an oil exploration project in the neighboring Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. He received some 2.7 million yuan in bribes by helping two drilling companies to win contracts.
Later, he was promoted as the general manager of CNPC Heilongjiang Sales Company, but he continued to take bribes from contractors and from his subordinates in exchange for job promotion, the report said.
Wang was arrested in December 2009. His downfall shocked the country's largest energy company because he was deemed a capable businessman who took credit for the company's rapid growth in revenue, the report said.
