CNR denies defective axle in one of its bullet trains
China CNR Corp Ltd, the nation's No. 2 train maker, denied that a crack had been found in the axle of a CRH380BL train carriage, the type used on the Shanghai-Beijing High-speed Railway.
The CRH380BL train had traveled some 6.8 million kilometers by August 16 after the high-speed rail was put into operation on June 30. Not a single axle had been replaced, CNR said in a statement yesterday.
The statement came after media report that a crack was detected in the trail axle of a CRH380BL train on July 15, according to a maintenance report obtained by the Caixin Century magazine.
An unnamed CNR technician told the Beijing Morning Post that the crack report was a false alarm because their detection device was too sensitive. The Railway Ministry held a meeting in July to discuss the issue and ordered to adjust the parameter of the detection device. The axle that was thought defective was then confirmed safe.
CNR has recalled 54 CRH380BL trains that reported various breakdowns since the Railway Ministry started a nationwide safety campaign after the July 23 bullet train crash killed 40 people. The recall had nothing to do with a defective axle, CNR said.
