CPC expels ex-military leader in graft probe

A FORMER military leader was yesterday expelled from the Communist Party of China for taking bribes, following a meeting of the CPC Central Committee’s Political Bureau.
The decision was made after an investigation found that Guo Boxiong, 73, the former vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, took advantage of his post to seek promotion and benefits for others and accepted bribes personally and through his family.
His case, which regards “suspected serious crime of taking bribes,” and related information will be passed to military prosecutors for handling in accordance with the law, the bureau said in a statement issued after the meeting, which reviewed and approved a report by the CMC disciplinary inspection authority.
“His acts seriously violated the CPC’s discipline and left a vile impact,” the statement said, adding that the CPC Central Committee launched an investigation into Guo’s activities on April 9.
Guo’s son, Major-General Guo Zhenggang, was put under investigation early this year.
Guo’s case follows that of Xu Caihou, who was a CMC vice chairman at the same time as Guo. Xu died of bladder cancer in March.
The government said in October that Xu had confessed to taking “massive” bribes in exchange for helping people to secure promotions.
