Cabbie killed by stray bullet during police nightclub raid
TWELVE men have been arrested for attacking police officers with knives during a nightclub raid in Dongguan, a city in southern Guangdong Province. The officers had to fire shots in self-defense and a taxi driver was killed by a stray bullet, Beijing News reported today.
Eight suspects were captured early yesterday morning and four more surrendered to the police on the same day, Dongguan police said in a statement.
The nightclub raid on Monday was carried out by police from Shenzhen, a neighboring city, who were hunting criminal gang members. They fired warning shots after knife-wielding thugs hurt six officers. One bullet hit the stomach of a taxi driver who was waiting for clients from the nightclub. He died of his wound in hospital around midnight.
The report said 36 plainclothes policemen took part in the raid and they arrested two alleged gang members and 36 drug takers.
A source with Shenzhen police said the family of the killed taxi driver Luo Lijun can apply for government compensation.
Details of the police raid are unavailable as investigation is ongoing. Police are urging other escaped attackers to surrender, the report said.
