Cabbie strike secures fare rise

TAXI fares are to rise next month in Hangzhou, the capital of east China's Zhejiang Province, following a three-day strike last month.

Hangzhou Municipal Government yesterday announced the plan for the rise, following a hearing earlier this month.

Under the chosen option, the new price keeps the flag-down fare at 11 yuan (US$1.72), passengers pay 2.5 yuan per kilometer after the first 3km, and 3.75 yuan per kilometer after 10km. The waiting fee is 2.5 yuan per four minutes.

To implement this raise, all taxis in the city will be equipped with new meters.

The current flag-down fare in Hangzhou is 11 yuan, including a one-yuan fuel surcharge, plus 2 yuan per kilometer after the first 3km, and 3 yuan per kilometer after 10km. The waiting fee is 2 yuan per five minutes.

Fare levels had not changed since 2006, and on August 1 thousands of cabbies went on strike, protesting over rocketing food, fuel and commodity prices.

The strike continued until the local government agreed to give drivers temporary subsidies and promised to hold a hearing and adjust fares by the end of October.
