Cadmium pollution in Liujiang River dropping to safe level
THE toxic spill of cadmium into a river in southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has been stemmed and no new polluting sources were found, said Gan Jinglin, director of Liuzhou City Environmental Protection Bureau.
Flowing water has diluted cadmium content to safe levels in the reservoir of the Lalang Hydropower Station on the Liujiang River, but the level of the carcinogenic chemical is still five times higher than normal in the Longjiang River, an upstream tributary of the Liujiang River, experts said.
Though a local water company assured Liuzhou City residents of safe and adequate water supply, cadmium pollution remains a big threat to local people, Xinhua News Agency cited the experts as saying.
"We are able to treat the tainted water in a short time to ensure sufficient supply of safe drinking water," Gan said.
The incident was first reported on Thursday, nearly two weeks after the Jinhe Mining Co Ltd discharged industrial waste into the Longjiang River, Xinhua said.
Authorities have suspended seven heavy metal producers along the Longjiang River and 500 million cubic meters of water held by the dam is expected to dilute the pollution.
