Cadmium pollution threatens Liuzhou water supply

CADMIUM concentration in the Longjiang River upstream of the Nuomitian Hydropower Dam near Liuzhou, a city in southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, was eight times higher than the official limit, officials said yesterday.

The toxic spill is approaching Liuzhou and the water pollution will peak in the next two days, Xinhua News Agency cited officials as saying.

"If we fail to stem the spill of the poisonous metal at the dam, it will be hard to keep Liuzhou's drinking water supply safe," said Tang Zhenguo, deputy head of Liucheng County where the dam is located.

More firefighters and armed police troops have been sent to the dam to pour neutralizers made from dissolved aluminum chloride into the Nuomitian reservoir, Xinhua said.

The safety of drinking water has become a grave concern for Liuzhou residents as Cadmium was detected in the local water source yesterday despite official pledges that the city's water supply would be safe and adequate.
