Café blast compensation set, probe goes on

FAMILIES of seven people killed in an Internet café blast in Kaili, a city in southwest Guizhou Province, will receive 60,000 yuan (US$9,000) each in compensation while the 37 injured will have 1,500 yuan each, said the city government.

Meanwhile, 19 households in a nearby five-story apartment building, which was also damaged by the blast on Saturday night, have been moved to temporary shelters in local hotels, Xinhua quoted Kaili authorities as saying today.

Police said they had caught the man, Wu Zhanzhi, for allegedly possessing the dangerous chemicals that caused the explosion. Wu allegedly stored packs of highly concentrated aluminum chloride and sodium nitrite in a shop right next to the Internet cafe, Lianxun, Xinhua reported.

Police said investigation was still going on to find what detonated the explosives.

The cafe's boss, Chen Chenggui, and manager, Xing Guangchang, are also being held for questioning by police, said Kaili Public Security Bureau.

The blast occurred at 11pm on Saturday and ripped through the café under a bridge, shattering its windows and blackening the walls. Seven were killed on the spot while a woman suffering extensive burns died in hospital on Sunday afternoon.
