Cafe blast families to get US$9,000
THE families of seven people killed in a blast at an Internet cafe in Guizhou Province will receive 60,000 yuan (US$9,000) each in compensation while the 37 injured will get 1,500 yuan each, said the city government.
A total of 19 households in a five-story residential building, which was close to the cafe and was also damaged in the blast on Saturday night, have been relocated to nearby hotels, Kaili City authorities said yesterday.
Police said they have detained a man, Wu Zhanzhi, for allegedly possessing the chemicals that were found to have caused the explosion. Wu allegedly stored packs of highly concentrated aluminum chloride and sodium nitrite, which are hazardous, in a shop that sold chemicals next to the Internet cafe.
Police said an investigation is still going on to find out why the chemicals exploded.
The cafe's owner Chen Chenggui and manager Xing Guangchang are also being held for questioning by police, said Kaili's Public Security Bureau.
The blast occurred at 11pm on Saturday and ripped through the cafe, shattering its windows and scorching walls. Seven were killed at the scene, while a woman suffering from extensive burns was pronounced dead after being treated yesterday afternoon in a local hospital.
