Call for law to punish drug-drivers
LAWMAKERS yesterday called for stricter driving laws to punish people convicted of causing accidents while driving under the influence of drugs or while using a cellphone.
Drugs seriously affect coordination and driving while under their influence can be more dangerous than driving while drunk, lawmaker Du Liming from southwest China’s Chongqing said at the bimonthly session of the National People’s Congress Standing Committee, which ends today.
While the top legislature deliberated a draft amendment to the Criminal Law, Du suggested a stipulation that people caught driving while on drugs should be detained and fined.
If other crimes are committed while under the influence of drugs, criminals should face heavier punishments, he said.
The draft already includes drink driving, speeding and the transportation of dangerous chemicals.
Lawmaker Jiang Wanqiu said there should also be more severe penalties for people who use cellphones while driving.
