Call for reports on students with HIV
Health authorities across the country have been told to report HIV cases among students to education authorities and the schools involved on a regular basis.
The move is to “better study prevention solutions together” according to a joint circular by the Health and Family Planning Commission and the Ministry of Education which emphasizes the importance of protecting students’ privacy.
The circular said there had been a large increase in HIV cases in schools and colleges in recent years and it highlighted issues such as a lack of self-protection awareness, poor communication among institutions and a lack of AIDS education.
The circular said free HIV tests and consulting service spots will be set up in colleges and secondary vocational schools, giving easier access to information and tests for students at risk. Psychological consulting and medical treatment will be provided.
Schools will also be required to give classes in AIDS prevention — six hours in junior high schools and four hours in senior high schools— and every college student should have attended a minimum one hour class on the subject.
