Call to step up border security
CHINA’S defense minister urged the military to step up border security during a tour of Yunnan Province, which borders Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam.
In March, 29 people were stabbed to death at a train station in Yunnan’s capital Kunming, an attack blamed on militant Islamists from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
Yunnan’s Party chief Qin Guangrong said those responsible had tried to leave China across the province’s border to wage “holy war.”
Touring Dehong, Baoshan and Nujiang in Yunana, Defense Minister Chang Wanquan said China must ensure the security of the border area. Drug-running, human trafficking and smuggling have long plagued China’s borders with southern neighbors.
