Callers torment grief-hit parents
THE parents of a seven-year-old girl killed by a hit-and-run driver in northwest China have been shocked to discover their offer of a reward to find the culprit has succeeded only in attracting bogus callers.
A truck struck Wang Feizi outside her home in a village in Urumqi in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region last month.
Her parents, who own a small plastics factory, offered a reward of 20,000 yuan (US$3,172) to catch the driver, later increasing it to 50,000 yuan, China News Service reported.
But instead of receiving useful leads, they have been plagued by calls from people falsely claiming to have seen the driver or his truck and demanding the money up front.
"My heart almost leaps out of my chest every time we get a call, but every time the leads given are false," said the child's mother, Duan Xiaoyan.
"We encountered a driver without a conscience but never expected to also meet so many people out to cheat us," she added.
Duan said she even prepared to pay the reward to one caller who provided a car plate number during a one-hour conversation. But at the last moment, police told her the number was false.
Undaunted, the parents plan to increase the reward to 100,000 yuan.
"I must catch the driver, no matter how much I have to pay, to let my daughter rest in peace and help my wife - who could not eat for six days after the accident - get out of this shadow," said the little girl's father.
The truck struck the child at 9pm on March 29, as she was playing in front of her house with friends, and drove off immediately, traffic police said.
A surveillance camera at a nearby paper mill recorded the white small truck, but failed to get its license plate number.
