Cambodia deports 39 Chinese suspects

CAMBODIA yesterday deported 39 suspected criminals to China’s mainland, including 25 from Taiwan.
The chief of the Interior Ministry’s Immigration Investigation Bureau, Gen. Ouk Haiseila, said the 25 Taiwanese and 14 from China’s mainland were sent on a special plane dispatched by the Chinese government. He said they were sent to China’s mainland because they had committed crimes against mainland citizens. They are accused of defrauding victims via phone calls made over the internet, which complicated the process of tracing them.
Originally, Cambodia planned to deport 35 people, but four more were arrested in raids this past week, Haiseila said.
Asked about Cambodia’s decision at a regular briefing yesterday in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying noted that “the Cambodian government said before that it will tackle the problem based on the ‘one-China’ policy.”
“We think highly of Cambodia’s attitude toward the issue,” she said. “We believe the competent authority in China will keep in close contact with and cooperation with its counterpart in Cambodia.”
