Camp head, trainers jailed for teenager's death

A HEADMASTER and seven trainers at a hiking camp in central China's Hubei Province have been jailed for up to 13 1/2 years after beating a 14-year-old student to death.

Head Zhang Yangyong got the longest sentence and the trainers received terms starting from 20 months for intentional injury, today's Changjiang Daily reported, citing the Hubei Province People's Procuratorate.

Prosecutors said the boy surnamed Yao joined in the camp on August 2 last year. The next day, Yao and 52 other students were ordered to hike from Yichang City to neighboring Dangyang City.

During the hike, Yao became exhausted and the trainers beat him in punishment.

When he finally reached the end, Yao was again beaten by the teachers. The next morning, he was found unconscious in bed and pronounced dead after being sent to a hospital.

A forensic report said Yao died from acute kidney failure after being beaten.
