Can China claim Okinawa?

THE People's Daily has called for a review of Japan's sovereignty over Okinawa - home to major US bases.
In an article in the Communist Party newspaper yesterday, Zhang Haipeng and Li Guoqiang, scholars at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said the Ryukyu islands, which include Okinawa, were Chinese before Japan annexed the chain in the late 1800s. They cited post-World War II declarations that required Japan to return Chinese territory.
