Canada releases top Chinese fugitive from jail
Canada's Immigration and Refugee Board has ordered one of China's most wanted fugitives to be released from a Canadian jail a day before he is set to argue against his deportation order in a federal court.
Agency member Geoff Remple said Wednesday that officials with Canada Border Services Agency have not proven Lai Changxing would flee if he was ordered deported to China.
For 12 years Lai has been fighting his deportation to China, where he was charged for orchestrating a smuggling ring that cheated millions of dollars in taxes.
Another immigration board member ordered Lai released last week but that decision was stayed by a federal court pending a review of that release order.
