Cancer mom inspires son's medical career

A STUDENT who took up medical studies to help cure his mother's cancer has won a full scholarship to the elite United States Baylor College of Medicine.

LI Hanzheng, 22, has majored in medical and life sciences to help cure his mother, who has conquered three cancers in 11 years with his encouragement, he told today's Guangzhou Daily.

Now he would further his study to help more mothers conquer illnesses and achieve more medical miracles, he said.

Li's mother Han Qi was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999 when Li was a grade-six pupil.

Despite surgery to remove the cancer, it later spread to her liver. Doctors told her that she only had two years to live, as only 1.75 percent of patients with her condition survived for five years.

Han said she was determined to survive because she didn't want her son to lose his mother at such a young age.

The cure was satisfactory but in early 2005, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Li was studying at boarding school and phoned his mother every day to encourage her to fight the disease.

The calls, which Li described as a talking therapy, have continued for six years even when he was on a three-month exchange program early last year at the Harvard Medical School in the United States, Han told the newspaper.

Li graduated from Zhongshan University's Life Science School over the weekend.
