Capital ban starts to clear the air
Beijing began reducing the number of cars on its roads yesterday in a bid to clear the air ahead of two major events.
The IAAF track and field world championships begin tomorrow and run until next Sunday, while a World War II victory parade is planned for September 3.
A parade rehearsal is being held on Sunday.
Cars will be allowed on the city鈥檚 roads on alternate days depending on their plate numbers and around 80 percent of official vehicles will also be taken off the road.
A similar policy led to blue skies during last year鈥檚 Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings.
The city published an open letter yesterday thanking citizens for their understanding about the traffic control measures.
The letter said the measures may bring some inconvenience but the city hoped for the public鈥檚 understanding and support.
