Capital clears air for APEC
MAJOR polluters will be ordered to cut production and work on some construction sites will stop in a bid to reduce pollution during next month’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in Beijing.
The discharge of pollutants in Beijing and neighboring Tianjin and Hebei Province is expected to be cut by a third thanks to a series measures. Beijing will also halve the number of cars on the road during the event with plate numbers determining when they can be driven.
“China will take the highest-level measures to guarantee air quality during the APEC meeting,” said Chai Fahe, vice president of the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences.
