Car caught traveling at take-off speed on highway

A black Toyota Crown broke the speeding record in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province yesterday by traveling at 224 kilometers per hour on Highway G25 – almost the take-off speed of an airplane.

The car driver had his license revoked immediately.

A highway police who was watching surveillance monitors in a room saw something like an insect flying past one screen but an alert from the surveillance system showed a black Toyota Crown was traveling 86 percent faster than the speed limit.

The car was caught in a photo taken by a high-resolution camera on the highway which connects Nanjing with Liangyungang, a port city in northern Jiangsu Province.

The offender also installed a device that can cover the last two digits of his car plate. The Suqian City-registered sedan was intercepted at a toll station and the driver claimed that a friend sitting in the car had just lost his mother.

The driver surnamed Zheng was fined 2,200 yuan (US$321) and revoked of his driving license. He is banned from driving for two years.
