Car plate tough to get in Beijing
IT is getting more difficult to get a car license plate in Beijing as the number of applicants for the city's monthly lottery continues to increase at a rapid rate.
Beijing conducted its third license plate lottery yesterday. The lottery, which is designed to stop chronic gridlock in the capital city, concluded with 17,600 applicants being granted plates, according to a spokesman for the municipal transport commission.
Nearly 400,000 people had applied for a plate at this lottery by March 8, including those who didn't receive a plate in the January or February lotteries, the spokesman said.
That meant approximately only one in 23 applicants was able to get a license plate this month, the spokesman added.
Applicants who failed in previous lotteries were automatically added to yesterday's lottery.
Chances of winning a license were one in 17 in February and one in 11 in January, according to the transport commission.
Beijing introduced the lottery in January this year to limit the number of cars in the city and reduce traffic jams.
Only 240,000 new plates will be issued this year, which is a drop from about 750,000 last year.
