Car used by police boss hits, kills woman, son

A DRIVER for a police official in Huai'an City of Jiangsu Province has been detained after he was accused of driving on the wrong side of the road at high speeds and knocking down a scooter, killing a woman and her 10-year-old son.

The victims' relatives told the Oriental Morning Post that the mother and son were still alive after they were dragged down the road more than 10 meters by the vehicle.

However, they died while waiting for the arrival of police, which took a half-hour, and an ambulance, which took 40 minutes, after the incident was reported by witnesses, said Yan Mengchun, husband of the dead woman. Yan said when police arrived, they "refused to get out of their car but were busy calling someone with their phones" when they realized a police car belonging to a police official surnamed Gao was involved, the newspaper said.

Witnesses told the newspaper that they saw an unidentified man secretly removing the police car's front plate which indicated it was a police vehicle. But he was stopped by angry residents when he tried to remove the rear plate, witnesses said.

Yan told the newspaper that the crash occurred at about 1:20pm last Friday when his wife, surnamed Hu, 27, was taking their 10-year-old son to school on the scooter and riding in the bicycle lane.

But the police car, speeding in the wrong lane, suddenly turned and knocked down the scooter, and kept going, dragging the mother and son more than 10 meters, said Yan and other witnesses.

Video footage uploaded by witnesses showed many residents gathered at the accident scene appeared angry to see the police arrive so late.

Some posted online that the nearest police station was only 1 kilometer away from the accident scene but it took police 30 minutes to arrive.

Some said they believed police deliberately delayed helping the victims since they were busy trying to figure out how to treat the driver.

Yan said there were three people, including the driver, in the car, but two fled after it hit the scooter.

Yan and some witnesses said they smelled alcohol in the car.

Huai'an City government, however, said the driver, surnamed Zhu, with Huai'an Police Bureau, had passed a blood test and was not driving drunk. Zhu has been detained for further investigation.
