Carbon monoxide the cause of farmers’ deaths in well
CARBON monoxide from a diesel engine killed six farmers who fell into a flood-prevention well yesterday evening at a farm in Leping in east China’s Jiangxi Province, investigators said.
A dense layer of carbon monoxide from a pump engine inside the well poisoned the men, according to local authorities. The well measures four meters in diameter at its mouth and three meters at the bottom.
The mouth of the well is 11 meters from the water’s surface and eight meters from the engine, which was not properly vented in the limited space.
Two farmers fell into the well, which stores excess water, while trying to get water for their crops, officials said. Four others, realizing the two farmers were missing, went to the well to rescue them, but also collapsed. Four died after being removed from the well and two died inside the well.
