Carcinogenic sauce in food

A Condiment producer in a southern Chinese city has made headlines again, this time for selling hundreds of tons of cancer-causing soy sauce to three local food producers after it was caught producing 90 boxes of mushroom soy sauce using industrial salt.

The Weiji Food Seasonings Co Ltd in Foshan, Guangdong Province, purchased a total of 760 tons of industrial salt between December and March, and produced more than 1,300 tons of soy source products, authorities said.

Some of its products directly entered the local market while others were sold to Foshan Dunmeiwei Food Co Ltd, Kaiping Household Condiment Co Ltd and Dongguan Xiangxinglong Food Co Ltd for further processing.

Weiji has been under criminal investigation for purchasing industrial salt and selling tainted products, Nanfang Daily reported yesterday.

Foshan police also detained Chen Yuhua and Guan Qunxin, managers from Weiji.

Industrial salt, with heavy metals, can cause cancer.
