Caring mother's wish is just to stay healthy
A WOMAN in her 80s has looked after four of her children for almost 30 years after they fell victim to a rare inherited disease which left them unable to care for themselves.
Zhao Yuhua's wish for Mother's Day on Sunday is to stay healthy so as to take care of her youngest daughter, the only survivor of the four, for as long as possible.
Zhao, 83, told a local newspaper that she had never had a good night's sleep in the past 30 years because she needed to get up frequently to care for her children.
The nightmare for Zhao, a Changchun native, began in 1984 when her second daughter became sick, followed by her eldest daughter and her only son.
They all suffered from CADASIL syndrome, a rare inherited condition which affects the blood vessels in the brain and causes strokes and other problems.
All three were married and had children but were taken home to be cared for by Zhao when the incurable disease struck.
The city leader in Changchun, capital of northeast China's Jilin Province, allocated Zhao a new apartment in 1993 when officials heard about the family's problems.
The three died between 1994 and 2000. Now her youngest daughter is ill and Zhao and her third daughter are caring for her.
"My daughter told me Mother's Day was coming and she wanted to celebrate the day for me. My best wish is to live a little bit longer so that she could suffer less," Zhao said.
