Casanova cop confesses to helping gangs

THE former deputy police chief of Chongqing Municipality has confessed to protecting local gangs, according to Yangtse Evening Post.

But during questioning he initially tried to distract investigators by telling them how he had sex with college students and female celebrities, the newspaper quoted a well-informed source as saying. But last month he stopped his games and confessed.

Wen, 53, was the director of Chongqing's justice department before he was taken into custody on August 7. He had also served as Chongqing's vice public security director for 16 years.

The investigation into Wen, who is being held in neighboring Guizhou Province, is almost complete, the source said.

He is expected to stand trial away from Chongqing because of the positions he held and his alleged connection with the city's gangs.

The source said Wen became desperate when he learnt his son returned to Chongqing from the United States at the beginning of last month.

The former veteran law enforcement officer and experienced interrogator apparently wept and wrote a letter of penitence during his confession to investigators.

However, he initially tried to distract investigators by bragging about having sex with pretty women, including college students and film actresses. He said he would pay them or blackmail them.

Wen said he would try to sleep with female celebrities when they visited Chongqing for business.

Wife's fury

However, Wen's boasts infuriated his wife, who told investigators about some of his illegal dealings and led them to 20 million yuan (US$2.92 million) in cash Wen had hidden in a fish pond.

About the same time, a senior policewoman in Chongqing was again investigated over her involvement with Wen.

Initially, Chen Guangming, once the only female drug chief in China, admitted her romantic involvement with Wen, who seems to have had many mistresses. This time she is being investigated over her alleged involvement in Wen's illegal activities.

Meanwhile, actress Yin Tao had denied Wen was her sugar daddy after a notorious domestic detective firm focusing on celebrity scandals said she had been maintained by Wen for three years.

Yin is working at the Television Art Center of the People's Liberation Army Air Force's political department. The center on Monday said it would take defamation action.
