Casino gang leader jailed for life
A GANG leader in Chongqing Municipality was sentenced to life in prison today for leading a mafia-like gang that ran casinos and prostitution dens in the city.
Wang Xiaojun was found guilty of running the biggest sports betting casino chain in Chongqing, earning more than 20 million yuan (US$2.9 million) since 2001, said Chongqing No.5 Intermediate People's Court.
Another 22 gang members were jailed for terms ranging between 18 months and 18 years.
Li Haibin, a former anti-gang police chief who also stood trial with the mob boss, was convicted taking bribes of 260,000 yuan from Wang and conniving with the gang. Li was jailed for 16 years and fined 300,000 yuan.
Prosecutors said Wang's gang had operated casinos on the Internet, and with the money they earned, opened a nightclub staffed with ex-convicts that offered sex services.
Wang earned more than 59 million yuan from prostitution alone, prosecutors said.
He confessed in court that he gave Chongqing's former top cop, Peng Changjian, 890,000 yuan in return for his protection. Peng was jailed for life for corruption and protecting criminal gangs in February.
But the court did not support the charge of tax evasion against Wang's gang for lack of evidence. The prosecutors said Wang had evaded more than 10.61 million yuan in taxes.
