Casualties unknown after Sinopec refinery blast in Hebei

An explosion rocked a Sinopec Group's oil refinery in Cangzhou City, north China's Hebei Province this morning. No casualties have been reported so far.

The blast occurred around 10am in the polypropylene factory of China's biggest chemicals manufacturer, China News Service reported.

The massive explosion shattered windows and blew off doors of surrounding houses and smoke filled the factory compound.

A road leading to the factory has been cordoned off as firefighters and medical professionals carried out rescue operations to save trapped workers.

The 180-hectare refinery complex was built in 1971. It can refine 3.5 million tons of crude oil a year to make polypropylene. Its sales revenue reached 10 billion yuan last year.
