Cause of crayfish poisoning still elusive

MARKET regulators in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, are screening crayfish vendors in the city's largest wholesale fish market after 19 people who ate crayfish a few days ago suffered rapid muscle breakdown.

Officers from the city's administration for industry and commerce were tracing the sources of the toxic crayfish and their bulk buyers, Nanjing Morning Post reported today. This would become their routine in the future, said the officers.

Though most vendors in the wholesale market could produce licenses and health certificate, officers were unable to check dealers outside the market, the paper said. Some of them sell dead crayfish collected in the market.

Local media reported on Monday that 19 crayfish eaters suffered from rapid muscle breakdown and acute kidney failure in Nanjing. Initially people suspected the symptoms were caused by a washing powder used to clean the freshwater crustacean.

But Nanjing authorities said at a press conference on Tuesday that they could not determine whether the disease was caused by crayfish. But they were certain that the washing powder or oxalic acid could not cause these symptoms.
