Cave-in buries 11 protesting teachers

ELEVEN of about 200 teachers were buried after a cave-in on a construction site where they were protesting at their school in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality on Monday, today's China News Service reported.

Four were in hospital and six teachers had minor injuries, the report said. All will soon be discharged. The construction company today fired workers involved in the dispute.

Both Fengjie Middle School and the construction company have agreed the dispute was caused by a communications breakdown. The company is building an expressway nearby and needed to use part of the school.

On Monday, seeing the workers digging away from the agreed construction zone, angry teachers rushed to the site to protest.

Though company officials ordered a work suspension, the earth where the teachers stood caved in, the report said.
