Celebrity adviser loses some credibility

A POLITICAL adviser has come under attack by many online after saying she would never vote against any proposal by the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference "because of patriotism."

Ni Ping, a former television hostess, also said she would never abstain from voting because she did not want to make trouble for her country.

Her remarks sparked an uproar among Internet users who cast doubts over her capability to make decisions as a political adviser.

Ni was being irresponsible, the Shanghai-based Oriental Morning Post said yesterday, adding that damage could be irreparable if legislation was passed with loopholes.

Ni told Guangdong-based New Express Daily yesterday that she agreed with all proposals put forward at the sessions.

She said 99 percent of the members voted for the proposals and it would be silly to doubt the ability of every one of them. "I was just thinking of the big picture," Ni said.

Shen Jilan, 80, the only deputy to the National People's Congress who has attended all annual meetings of the legislature since 1954, said she was proud to have voted to pass all proposals each year.

Shen said that being a people's representative meant following the Party's lead.

The newspaper said it was sad that there were still people who thought toeing the line was the only way forward.
