Cell death goes to the top
CHINA'S top prosecutors are investigating the death of a 33-year-old detainee who was found dead with seven broken ribs one day after being put into custody in south China's Guangdong Province.
The Supreme People's Procuratorate is reviewing the case of Lin Lifeng, who Guangdong authorities claimed died of a heart attack in June 2009, Beijing News reported.
A subsequent investigation by provincial-level authorities concluded that Lin died of respiratory failure, having been restrained by police with rope, bedsheets and chains in a cell in Wuchuan County.
Wuchuan police rejected this and asked for a review by top prosecutors.
Lin, who had bouts of mental illness, was detained after allegedly abducting at knifepoint an 11-year-old boy.
The next day, Lin was found dead in his cell with several broken bones, external injures and a swollen stomach. An autopsy by Guangdong-based Zhongshan University said Lin died of a heart attack.
Lin's family demanded a new investigation, which concluded that he died of respiratory failure.
Lin's family said they were offered a "settlement under the table" by police.
