Central government spends 22m yuan on software

CENTRAL government departments have completed the purchase of genuine computer software, worth 22.11 million yuan (US$3.34 million), according to a joint press conference held by the General Administration of Press and Publication, Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

By the end of last year, 31 central government departments bought 19,827 sets of software, including 523 sets of operating system software, 17,113 sets of office software and 2,191 sets of anti-virus software. Foreign products accounted for more than two thirds of all purchases.

Qingdao City Government is the first of local governments in China to complete the installation of genuine software at a cost of 76.63 million yuan.

Under a regulation issued by the State Council, China's cabinet, the central government and regional governments above county level should install genuine office software by the end of October.

Commenting that most of the purchasing money went to foreign software providers, Wang Ziqiang, director of Copyright Management of the General Administration of Press and Publication, said it showed the Chinese government's fair treatment toward foreign products as well as a technology gap between domestic and foreign software.
