Charity coal for needy homes full of stones

THE coal provided by the government of northern Shanxi Province to low-income families for winter heating was found inferior in quality and short-weighted.

Each of the 150-plus households in Zhuangli Village of Linfen City received no more than 900 kilos of coal, short of the one ton promised by the government. And each family was charged 10 yuan (US$1.57) for delivery, the People's Daily reported today.

The 300 or so households in the neighboring Xiaosu Village received even less coal, about 600-700 kilos each, the report said.

The inferior coal was also mixed with stones and water to cheat on weight. "Almost half of the coal was stones and incombustible," one villager complained on the Internet.

The same problem was also found in other cities in Shanxi.

The provincial government promised earlier to supply one ton of coal to low-income families free of charge from this winter to the end of 2015. It has ordered local authorities to distribute more than 7 million tons of coal to low-income families in 11 cities, the report said.
