Charity donations rising after Red Cross scandal

CHINESE charities received nearly 98.94 billion yuan (US$16 billion) in donations last year, 21.06 percent more than in 2012, according to the 2013 China Charity Donation Report.
Enterprises were responsible for nearly 70 percent of the donations, said the China Charity Information Center report.
It said online donations, on sites such as Sina and QQ, were at a record high of some 300 million yuan, with most coming after reports of disasters or people badly in need of help.
Previously, there had been a sharp drop in donations for two consecutive years, attributed to the Guo Meimei scandal, where Guo boasted of a lavish lifestyle while falsely claiming to be head of an organization linked to the Red Cross Society of China.
Donations overall dropped to 84.5 billion yuan in 2011, down 18.1 percent year on year, and continued to drop in the following year, to 81.7 billion yuan.
In 2011, the Red Cross received just 2.87 billion yuan, a fall of 59.4 percent. In 2012, it received 2.19 billion yuan.
However, two years of efforts to regain its reputation seems to have worked and last year it received 3.21 billion yuan.
Despite being the nation’s biggest charity, its share of the nation’s total donations contribution is relatively small.
Sun Yezhu, a researcher at the charity center, explained: “It is a humanitarian organization and thus raising money isn’t its main task.”
