Charity transparency worries public

ONLY 8 percent of Chinese believe the country's charities are transparent enough, according to a new survey.

And 54 percent of those taking part in the China Charity & Donation Information Center study said they were very concerned about charity organizations' openness - especially toward donors.

Half of those surveyed said they donated money or materials to charity regularly, but 90 percent of donors said they never received a response from recipient organizations.

The report showed that people expected to be told how their donations are used.

And more than 70 percent said they want to know about the financial conditions of charity organizations.

The survey also interviewed 99 charity organizations on the Chinese mainland, and 64 percent admitted they have never published any information on how donations are spent.

Most put this down to staff shortages and the fact that there is no legal requirement to do so.

A series of scandals have damaged public confidence in charities this year.

The information center survey included online and written questionnaires.
