Checks on tracks after sick claims
Checks are to be carried out on newly installed running tracks at schools in east China’s Jiangsu Province after reports of pupils falling ill, the province’s education department said yesterday.
Students at schools in Nanjing, Suzhou, Wuxi and Changzhou have been complaining of headaches, nosebleeds and skin rashes due to a strong odor given off by the material used, according to China National Radio.
At the new Yuanhe Primary School in Suzhou, more than a dozen students had such symptoms, CNR reported.
It said an investigation found the school had opened with the necessary approvals and the company which had installed the running track had been using another company’s environmental test report. The track was removed after parents complained, CNR said.
According to the Modern Express newspaper, students at Chongning Road Experimental Primary School in Wuxi had to wear masks because of a foul smell from a running track still being built when the new semester began.
Some students were reported to have complained of sore throats, bleeding noses and vomiting.
The school said it couldn’t confirm a link between the running track and sick students but had asked a professional institute to test air quality on campus, the newspaper reported.
