Chem firm boss appeals
A CHEMICAL company boss yesterday appealed his 11-year prison sentence after he was convicted of criminal environmental negligence leading to a tap-water contamination scandal.
Sources from the Intermediate People's Court in Yancheng, Jiangsu Province, said Hu Wenbiao, chairman of Biaoxin Chemical Co, and the firm's workshop director, Ding Yuesheng, had filed appeals.
The two were sentenced by Yandu District Court in Yancheng on Friday.
It was the first case in the country where those who violated emissions rules that led to environmental pollution were jailed.
Hu was given 10 years on the charge of spreading poison and an additional year for writing false value added tax invoices in another case. Ding was sentenced to six years in jail.
Hu and Ding were held responsible for the illegal discharge of the Biaoxin's poisonous waste water into a river between November 2007 and February 2009.
The river was a source of water for two water utilities, Yandu District Court said.
The court ruled that both were aware that their actions were illegal.
More than 200,000 residents in Yancheng were without tap water for nearly 67 hours in February following the contamination.
