Chemical plants shut down for polluting a longevity town
SEVERAL chemical plants in Laizhou in east China's Shandong Province have halted production after their illegal dumping of chemical wastes was linked to a rising number of cancer deaths in surrounding villages.
Among the producers, Shandong Keyuan Pharmaceutical Co Ltd, a leading tax payer in Laizhou, used to discharge untreated chemical waste directly into the Laizhou Bay. Now it is building a 26-million-yuan (US$4.1 million) waste treatment facility, China National Radio reported yesterday.
The Economic Information Daily said more than 30 people in nearby villages had died of respiratory, blood and liver cancers, which were attributed to toxic pollutants from these chemical plants.
The high cancer rates of these villages have turned Laizhou, once known as the "longevity town," into a "cancer town," the report said.
