Chen Shui-bian to have cardiac surgery
FORMER leader of Taiwan Chen Shui-bian will be hospitalized for one week after he was diagnosed with coronary syndrome and will undergo cardiac surgery today, according to the Taoyuan General Hospital.
Chen, who is currently serving a prison sentence for graft, was granted a temporary leave from prison yesterday and received comprehensive medical checkup at the hospital.
Visitors to Chen were quoted by local media as saying that doctors had also found a small tumor on Chen's prostate and it is yet to be determined whether the tumor was malignant.
Chen was sentenced to 17.5 years in prison for corruption and money laundering during his tenure as the leader of Taiwan from 2000 to 2008. Chen began serving his sentence in December 2010.
