Chengdu racecourse plan sparks outrage
SOUTHWEST China's Sichuan Province will invest 1 billion yuan (US$147.6 million) to build the country's largest horse racing venue, sparking criticisms of waste.
The construction of the racing field has started in the provincial capital Chengdu's Wenjiang District. The venue will hold 50,000 spectators when completed, Chengdu Business Daily reported today.
One official with the equestrian venue said they have hired the most expensive construction company to build the largest and the most stylish race course in China.
But Netizens were not happy with that 1 billion yuan of their tax money was going to be spent on a sport that they barely knew.
An official was quoted in the report saying the biggest problem in the way of Chengdu's equestrian development was that locals were not familiar with the sport. He said the city will start a promotion campaign for horse racing.
