Chiang's former villa is now a posh restaurant
CLOSE on the heels of the Palace Museum's luxurious club scandal in Beijing, the former residence of late Kuomintang leader Chiang Kai-shek and his wife Soong Mei-ling is also said to have been turned into a high-end restaurant, Yangtze Evening News reported yesterday.
The three-story Meiling Villa, an 80-year-old heritage structure at the foot of the Purple Mountain in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, has been welcoming patrons and wedding guests who have ties with its operator over the past eight years, an unnamed waitress told the Nanjing newspaper.
A manager surnamed Jin said they had proficient cooks to make high-end cuisines. They also provided wedding banquet service. The minimum charge is set at 200 yuan (US$30.74) for each person. Usually a small-sized banquet has at least 10 tables.
A former customer said he chose the restaurant to treat his "important" guests. "They provide favorite cuisines of Soong and Chiang in a very beautiful setting. Besides, the idea that they are dinning in the former dwelling of the great figures flattered my guests," said the customer who didn't give his name.
Jin added that the restaurant is fully booked almost every day and advance reservations are a must. And reservations are available only to those acquainted with her in some way or other, the report said.
The villa was built in the early 1930s and functioned as a weekend resort for the couple and other senior officials of the Kuomintang. It was included in the national protection list for historical buildings in 2001.
Though put under the management of Zhongshan Mausoleum, it was "merged" into the Jiling Hotel Group in 1990, according to Jin.
