Chicken fed stone powder to cheat on weight
CHICKENS were found to have been fed barite powders to add weight during a highway check by Chongqing commercial and industrial watchdog.
A truck carrying nearly 1,000 live chickens from Guizhou Province to Chongqing, both in southwest China, was seized on the highway on the early morning of May 8, China News Service reported today.
Each chicken was stuffed 300 to 400 grams of the mineral powder to increase their weight, said the owner. Tests conducted by Chongqing Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau found a high level of magnesium and barium in the chicken. It is still unknown whether these chickens are harmful to human health.
Insiders said chickens are fed mineral powders so they can sell for more money.
