Child, 5, missing after falling into open manhole to sewer in Hunan

A 5-YEAR-OLD remained missing today after falling through an open manhole into a sewer at around 8:40am yesterday in Liuyang, a city of central Hunan Province.
An intensive search of the sewer system, covering an area about 2 kilometers long by 9pm yesterday, turned up nothing.
The incident occurred when the toddler was playing on a sidewalk that was being renovated. Workers from Hunan Yongxin Construction Company hadn’t covered the manhole, Xiaoxiang Morning Post reported.
By yesterday afternoon, the manhole has been covered with wood and fenced up. Every one of manholes in surrounding areas was opened and guarded as the search continued. Some manholes were seen being pumped out and water had been cut to some areas, the newspaper reported.
