Child dies, 3 hurt as nursery roof falls in
ONE child was killed and three injured when a residential kindergarten’s roof collapsed in the early hours yesterday in the central province of Henan.
Children were sleeping in the kindergarten dormitory in Dongjiahe County, Xinyang City, Shihe District, when the roof caved in at around 1am.
Kindergarten staff and nearby residents rushed to rescue the children, aged under seven, from the rubble.
One child died on the way to hospital and three suffered injuries, reported www.dahe.cn, the website of Dahe Daily in Henan.
The other nine children who had been sleeping in the dorm were uninjured, it was reported.
According to an initial investigation by the local government, the kindergarten was not registered and was located in a converted residential building.
The kindergarten principal, surnamed Yu, had removed a load-bearing wall during renovations, which could have led to the collapse, reported the newspaper.
Yu was detained by Shihe District as the local procuratorate is involved in the case, while Xinyang City ordered all its kindergarten and primary schools to conduct safety checks.
It was reported that Yu suffered a heart attack on hearing the news and was taken to hospital.
Some parents in China place their children in residential kindergartens during the week, often due to work commitments, bringing them home for weekends.
