Child rapist caught 17 years later escapes again

POLICE have issued an arrest warrant for a fugitive who had been on the run for 17 years, was caught a week ago but escaped again on Tuesday as he was escorted to his hometown in central Henan Province.

Kang Jianlin, who allegedly kidnapped and raped young girls 17 year ago, was caught in southern Guangdong Province on September 18 and was escorted to Henan by train. He and four policemen got off the train in Wuhan, Hubei Province on Tuesday and were about to take a police car for the rest of the journey.

At 5pm, Kang said he wanted to use the bathroom. An officer accompanied him to a public toilet and waited outside because the toilet has no windows. But Kang found one on the stairway to second floor and jumped off it into a nearby residential complex.

However, surveillance cameras in the complex did not capture his images and he was believed to have disappeared through a fire escape passage.

Henan and Hubei police have launched a manhunt and published Kang's description on various media to seek clues to his whereabouts.
