Child rapist loses appeal

A COURT in southeast China's Fujian Province has upheld a 10-year jail sentence against a man who raped a 13-year-old girl who slept with him for money.

The man surnamed Luo, 46, owned a jewelry business in Xiamen City. The court convicted Luo of twice raping the girl in Xiamen in 2008. He was also ordered to pay the girl's family 40,000 yuan (US$5,980) in compensation.

He appealed against the sentence saying he should not be convicted of rape because the girl agreed to have sex with him, fznews.com.cn reported yesterday.

The court said on Saturday that Luo also paid to have sex with several other minors in local junior high schools. But none of these girls reported the matter to police because they all took money from Luo.

The man was arrested last March after the 13-year-old girl found herself six months pregnant and told her parents about her secret deal with Luo. Her doctor said abortion was not possible so late in pregnancy.

Luo was introduced to the girl by a 15-year-old high school drop-out, who also slept with Luo for money. Luo paid the 15-year-old, surnamed Lin, 1,000 yuan and Lin gave the 13-year-old victim 600 yuan.

Lin said Luo had a special interest in underage girls because he thought "minors were cleaner." She introduced several of her old schoolmates to Luo, who were paid 1,000 yuan each time.

Lin was not punished because she was still a minor when the case came to light. Her father told reporters that he never disciplined Lin and gave her whatever she wanted.
